What is Wellness

The preamble to the World Health Organization (WHO) constitution states Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
Read the entire Preamble here…

The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. This definition spans six to twelve dimensions including physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental health.

Choosing the wellness way

The US healthcare industry anticipates an acute shortage of medical specialists including surgeons, doctors and nurses by 2025. An aging population, increasing numbers of people in the healthcare system and retiring doctors are expected to drive this shortage.

As the healthcare system continues its pattern of rising costs and reduced services, EWO is focused on achieving sustainable health through early adoption of wellness lifestyles and habits. Doing so can help prevent a host of disorders including chronic diseases and makes it possible to reduce dependency on the traditional healthcare system instead of making it the first line of defense.

At EWO, we believe this is a choice worth considering. By taking a holistic and preventive approach to health instead of a purely mechanistic one as the healthcare industry does, one is more likely to avoid health pitfalls and remain healthy. Prevention is not the only benefit however. Wellness also plays an important role in health recovery, the enjoyment of life and self improvement initiatives. These benefits apply to personal and family life as well as the work environment.

As a viable alternative to our healthcare system, wellness practices employ a more sustainable approach to putting us back in control of our own health. This can minimize healthcare bills by supporting prevention and recovery from disease and injury, as well as enabling self-improvement across various dimensions, helping us live and enjoy life to its full potential.

By optimizing wellness, we can reduce the need for expensive hospital stays with the accompanying exposure to drugs, surgery, medical bills and loss in quality of life. Although we will need help from the healthcare system on occasion, it is also within our grasp to minimize the impact, frequency and duration of these episodic needs.

In addition to the individual benefits above, wellness holds the promise of improving our workplace environment, reducing public health issues and even addressing the growing need for change as relates to environmental issues. If you believe that the world’s oceans face a problem with plastic, that climate change is real, that our air and water could be cleaner, then you are in the right place.

Why ‘EWO’

EWO stands for ‘Eyes Wide Open’ and the enhanced awareness of wellness options and choices we hope to bring to our members via education, media and information sharing. We hope our services will open our members’ eyes to the opportunities and possibilities available to enhance wellness in their lives.

The vision for EWO originated from a desire to find solutions to the problem below.

“While only 20% of healthcare outcomes are the result of clinical care, this care consumes well over 80% of health-related spending. Although individuals usually directly control the factors responsible for more than 80% of health outcomes (outside the scope of clinics, doctors and hospitals), they do not have the knowledge, motivation or support to manage them. Our existing healthcare system was built to fix problems after they occur. It does not help avoid problems or optimize enjoyment and fulfillment in our lives.”
Dave Chase, CEO’s Guide to Restoring the American Dream
